Daniel Gremelle

Born in 1963 in Pas de Calais, Daniel Gremelle began his musical studies at the age of 16 at the Douai conservatory, where he was unanimously awarded a gold medal in 1983. 1984: 1st Prize with unanimous congratulations from the jury of the City of Paris 1985: 1st Prize of Honor at the Bellan competition. 1987: 1st Prize unanimously at the UFAM international competition in Paris; 1st Prize unanimously with congratulations from the jury at the Concours des jeunes interprètes de la ville de Dunkerque and Best Soloist Medal. 1988: 1st Prize at the Concours National d'interprétation musicale d'Aix les Bains and 1st Prize at the CNSM de Paris (class of Daniel Deffayet).

1989 : Premier au Concours international de saxophone de Paris à Radio France, il remporte le Grand Prix. Premier nommé de la Guilde Française des Artistes Solistes, il est le seul saxophoniste au monde à avoir obtenu cette distinction. 1990 : 1er Grand Prix à l'unanimité au Concours International « Adolphe Sax ». Solo saxophonist with the Musique des Gardiens de la Paix since 1985 and soloist with the Orchestre National de l'Opéra de Paris since 1990, he is frequently and regularly invited to play with prestigious orchestras such as : Orchestre National de France, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre du Capitole de Toulouse, Orchestre de la Scala de Milan, Berlin Philharmonic...

As a result, he has played under such great conductors as Pierre Boulez, Myung-Whun Chung, David Robertson, Michel Plasson, Georges Prêtre, Kent Nagano, Semyon Bychkov, Jeffrey Tate, James Conlon, Claudio Abbado, Ulf Schirmer, Seiji Osawa, Lorin Maazel... His career as an international soloist has taken him to some of the world's greatest concert halls: Japan, Brazil, China, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Slovakia, Canary Islands, Taiwan... and as soloist with numerous orchestras.

An experienced pedagogue, he is professor of saxophone at the Conservatoire National de Région de Rueil-Malmaison and collection director at Billaudot. He is the creator and dedicatee of numerous concertos for saxophone and orchestra: -creation of Pierre-Max Dubois's last work : 2nd saxophone concerto with the Douai Symphony Orchestra; -concerto by Armando Ghidoni in Italy with the Trento Philharmonic Orchestra; -Sonances by Patrice Sciortino in Slovakia with the Kosice Orchestra; -French premiere of Michael Nyman's “Where The Bee Dances” at the Salle Gaveau with the Orchestre Colonne; -concerto by Michiru Oshima in Japan with the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra, and with the Orchestre de Picardie; -concerto for saxophone by Francine Aubin (2004); - “The Passing Months” by Conrad Cummings (American composer).

Thanks to the distinctive quality of his sound, his impressive technique and extraordinary virtuosity, and the rich musicality of his interpretations, he is considered one of the most brilliant saxophonists of our time.
